Our dream is to give you definitions for all words of all languages.
What makes Gigadictionary exceptional?
Gigadictionary has been designed to offer information about all world’s languages in one spot.
Anybody can help us build the dictionary by adding new information.
Importantly, Gigadictionary’s structure and design guarantee the best possible use of users's input.
A wide selection of languages all in one spot
The number of languages included in Gigadictionary is already quite impressive. Of course the set is going to be further expanded.
Yet, what is important is that there is no need to worry about the excess information.
Creating your personal User Profile allows you to specify the languages you need and the results of your search will include these languages only.
Easy search
Gigadictionary’s search engine allows you:
  • to find words regardless of their form – if you can’t remember a word’s basic form, any existing form will be enough
  • not to be bothered by special characters – the use of their reduced equivalents without diacritics will never prevent you finding the word you are looking for
  • to include all the languages you may need in your search

Data editing
Anybody can add new data to the dictionary.
The real difference however comes from the way Gigadictionary processes users’ input:
  • Data adding is highly convenient and effective – according to the ‘maximum effect, minimum effort’ principle.
  • The basic rule at Gigadictionary is that all data needs to be edited just once.
e.g. Once we define two words as antonyms this information appears when we show either word and we don't need to define it twice.
  • Gigadictionary and all its data can be displayed in many language versions.
e.g. Once we define conjugation of some verb we can present this information in any language used to display Gigadictionary's pages.
Smart translation adding
To make the process of assigning translations easier and more effective, we have come up with a new-fangled solution that makes Gigadictionary different from the all traditional dictionaries available online:
  • Words in different languages which have the same meaning form a group of translations.
  • By adding a single word to the group you are in fact translating it into all languages included in the group at one go.
For example:
Whenever a new word is added to a group of, let's say 20 items, 20 translations are added at one go. For the same effect to be achieved with other dictionaries you would have to add the 20 translations word by word.

What difference does this make in practice?
With Gigadictionary for a group of 20 items to be created you need to take 20 steps (you add a word to the group 20 times).
With other dictionaries, you would have to define every single word, out of 20, with 19 translations bit by bit. This would take, in total, 380 steps! What is more – at Gigadictionary the data can be displayed in several language versions at once.

And that’s not all…
Groups of translations are assigned with images to make the process of translation adding even more convenient.
To add a word to a group it is enough to know how to refer to the thing presented in the image.
In this way, you can create a multilingual dictionary without speaking a single foreign language!
A multilingual user interface
All data available from Gigadictionary can be displayed in any language version.
Our team keep working on new language versions of this page. Currently, French and Spanish versions are being prepared.
This makes all the info added by our users available to an ever growing number of people.

For example:
The info that the English term ‘big’ is the antonym of the English adjective ‘small’ is displayed on the pages with definitions for the two words respectively. The pages can be opened in any language version. However, they will continue to be the pages for the English ‘big’ and ‘small’ (with the info about the antonymy relationship still displayed). Along similar lines, translations of these words into other languages (e.g. the Italian adjectives ‘piccolo’ and ‘grande’) have their own pages that can be displayed in any language version, including English.
Sounds convincing?
All this makes Gigadictionary the only dictionary that can offer definitions for all world’s languages in one spot.
