Gigadictionary is a dictionary designed to store data from all world’s languages in one spot.
We have been working on Gigadictionary with two priorities in mind. Namely, it should be user-friendly and users should be able to expand it easily.
The solution we have created has brought the following payoffs:
- Easy search - there is no need for a user to be familiar with the basic word form in order to find information about it. It is enough to type any existing word form into the search box.
- Wide selection of languages all in one spot - the language set of Gigadictionary is already quite impressive
but it’s obviously going to be expanded continuously.
At the same time, there is no need to worry about the excess of superfluous info.
By registering, you create your own User Profile and specify the languages you need – it will only be data from these languages that the results of your search will include.
- Multilingual user interface - once you have added data to Gigadictionary, the info becomes available to all users.
We want everybody to have access to the collected data and we are doing our best for new language versions of Gigadictionary to be ready soon!
- Smart translation adding - translations of a term in all languages are grouped together. By adding a single word to the group you are in fact translating it into all these languages at one go!
- Data editing - everyone can expand Gigadictionary.
- Respect for the work of the user - we have made sure that the input provided by our users is processed to the greatest extent possible.

At the moment the dictionary can be used and expanded by anyone.
We wish to create a network of users eager to facilitate the development of the project.
Obviously, we keep working on implementing some new options.
Please look at the news page to see the list of latest and future changes.
Also let us know if you have an idea how to make this site better.
There are actually more ways of expanding the portal than you could possibly imagine.
Practically any type of help is welcome.
For example:
- tell your friends about the site - we are sure they will love it as much as you do.
- tell us what would you like to improve - users’ satisfaction is our top priority.
- add new data - when you enter ‘Expand Gigadictionary’ you will find wordlists that need improvement.
- add a language - if you speak a language that is not included in our base you can help us introduce it into Gigadictionary. Get in touch with us!
- translate this page into another language - help us translate user interface into a language you speak.
Your profile allows you to customize the dictionary according to your needs.
By default the search returns data for more widespread languages (other results are hidden.)
Creating your own profile allows you to select the required languages that later become the default languages of your results.
There are no commitments.
We will use the data you provide us with only when you explicitly ask us to get in touch with you (e.g. by sending an e-mail in case you’ve forgotten your password).
Click on the ‘I've forgotten my password’ in the Log in menu bar.
When you create a new account, defining your e-mail address is not required.
Yet, if we have no access to it, there is no way for us to contact you in case you have forgotten your password.
Hence, if the e-mail address has not been specified, your password cannot be retrieved.
You have been recognized by Gigadictionary and your language settings are being loaded.
However, you are not automatically logged on to the dictionary.
This saves your time - you can use your settings straightaway with no need to log in.
Yet, to see or update your personal information you still need to log in using your password.
In this way we make sure everything is both convenient and secure.
Yes, it is.
You can erase your profile along with all the personal data.
All you need to do is log in, and go to 'Removing the profile' tab in 'Edit your profile' menu.
We wish to make sure that all the information available from Gigadictionary is perfectly reliable.
Therefore, all the implemented changes need to be accepted by our moderators first, which may take some time.
But be patient – it definitely won’t take too long as we do appreciate your input!
Straightforward as it may seem, the identification of parts of speech for a language is in fact quite a difficult task.
For example, for English about 24 parts of speech (or their varieties) have been specified.
Gigadictionary team are doing their best to assign more languages with a proper set of parts of speech.
For the languages we are still working on only two parts of speech have been assigned: ‘proper noun’ and ‘unclassified’.
If you speak a language and wish to help us include it in Gigadictionary, get in touch with us.
Images can be inserted to convey the meaning of words within a translation group.
The image you want to add needs to be accepted by our administrators first, which may take some time.
Additionally, there can be no more than 3 pictures awaiting acceptance for a group.
There can be up to 6 translations into one language for a single term within a translation group.
If you notice a case where this is not enough, let us know.
If you wanted to add a translation and you don't understand why does the search box pop up, see section 3.5.
Related words are pairs or groups of linked words. All the words which form a certain pair/group link each other.
Therefore to define a new 'related word' you need to find the item to link.
Additionally, the 'search and selection' process is vital because some words can be, for example, both nouns and verbs.
If you have problems finding the word you are looking for, see section 3.6.
If a word is not there, you should add it to Gigadictionary’s database.
Go to ‘Add a new word’ in the ‘Expand Gigadictionary’ menu bar.
After the word is added you can define its related words.
Since data available from Gigadictionary can be edited by anybody we had to take some precautions in case somebody wanted to enter a potentially dangerous HTML/javascript code.
Chars like < or > are displayed as normal text. It is not possible to use them to form HTML tags.
You can however use following structures to get some basic text effects:
-
$amp$ - use $amp$ instead of & to write HTML special characters.
e.g. in order to display a ± symbol use $amp$plusmn; instead of ±.
-
$sub$ - for subscript to be displayed.
e.g. use H$sub$2$/sub$O for H2O to be displayed.
-
$sup$ - for superscript to be displayed.
e.g. use E=mc$sup$2$/sup$ for E=mc2 to be displayed.
